Grid, Paylines, and How Wins Work

Mahjong Ways runs on a 5x4 grid with 1024 fixed ways to win. All symbols are square mahjong tiles. Fa - the green character tile - is the top-paying symbol at 100x for five of a kind across maximum ways, followed by Zhong (red character, 80x), a purple-border frame tile (60x), and Ba Wan, the red numeral tile (40x). Four lower-paying tiles fill the set: multi-circle and multi-bamboo tiles at 20x each for five, then single-circle and single-bamboo at 10x. The Wild is a gold ingot with a glowing inscription. It substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter.

Wins form when matching symbols land from the leftmost reel through consecutive reels to the right. After a win resolves, all winning symbols explode and new ones cascade down from above. If the replacement arrangement produces another win, the sequence continues - each new cascade step is a separate round of the multiplier logic. The chain ends when no further winning combination can be made.

The game runs in portrait orientation. There is an intro screen on first load - I tapped past it before starting. The "1024 WAYS" banner sits in gold lettering at the top of the frame above the multiplier track throughout play.

Gold Plated Symbols and the Multiplier Track

This is the mechanic that separates Mahjong Ways from a straight cascade slot. Gold Plated symbols appear only on reels 2, 3, and 4 - never on the outer reels. They look like standard tiles but carry a visible gold border glow. Their function: if a Gold Plated symbol participates in a cascade win and the chain continues, that symbol transforms into a Wild for all subsequent cascade steps within that same spin.

The transformation is permanent for the duration of the round. A Gold Plated Fa tile that wins in the first cascade becomes a Wild in the second, a Wild in the third, and so on until the chain ends. Because Gold Plated symbols can appear across all three central reels, multiple transformations within a single chain are possible - the central three columns can progressively fill with Wilds as the sequence runs.

I watched the multiplier track step through its sequence during cascade chains in my session. At round start the x1 step sits glowing gold. After the first cascade win, the glow shifts to x2. After the second win, to x3. The third cascade win - or any beyond - locks the track at x5 for the rest of that round. On a four-cascade run with Gold Plated Wilds converting through steps two and three, the final cascades are running with Wilds covering the middle columns and x5 applied to every win. That is how the larger base-game results happen. The biggest single base-game cascade in my session reached 128x at $12 bet.

The Gold Plated restriction to reels 2, 3, and 4 sets a deliberate ceiling. Reels 1 and 5 cannot produce Gold Plated symbols, which means the outer reels can only get Wilds through cascade replacement, not transformation. In 1,740 spins it felt about right.

Free Spins Feature

Three Scatter symbols anywhere on the grid trigger Free Spins. The base award is 12 free spins. Each additional Scatter beyond three adds two more. Free spins can be retriggered - three more Scatters during the feature adds another 12, with additional Scatters adding two each beyond that.

The meaningful change in Free Spins is the multiplier track. The base game runs x1 | x2 | x3 | x5. In Free Spins it doubles: x2 | x4 | x6 | x10. The same cascade-advances-the-multiplier logic applies, but each step is twice as large. The first cascade win in a Free Spins round immediately puts the multiplier at x2. The third cascade step locks the track at x10. Combined with Gold Plated Wilds converting through the chain, the theoretical path to the 25,000x maximum runs through here - though it requires an exceptional alignment across multiple cascade steps at the x10 level.

There is no Buy Bonus option. Mahjong Ways was released in December 2019, before PG Soft introduced feature-buy across their catalog. Free Spins can only be reached naturally.

In my 1,740 paid spins, the feature triggered 16 times - roughly once every 109 spins in this session, which will vary. Free spins awarded per feature ranged from 17 to 54, the higher counts coming from retriggers adding to the base 12. The session's best feature ran 54 free spins (spin 730) and produced 255.6x bet.

I ran 1,740 paid spins in the PG Soft demo at $12 per spin. The session ran for roughly three and a half hours.

I started at 100,000 and ended at 111,824.20 - up about 12%. That came largely from two bonus clusters. In the first (around spins 1,106-1,128) three Free Spins features triggered within 22 spins of each other. In the second (around spins 1,440-1,520) four features arrived in 80 spins. Outside those clusters, the session was steady but unremarkable - the balance sat just below the starting line around spin 484 (99,726.40) before recovering.

The 25,000x theoretical maximum did not come close to landing here; the best feature was 255.6x. The x10 multiplier step was reached in bonus rounds, but the cascade alignment required for the game's ceiling did not materialise. That is normal session variance, not a statement about the game's potential.

Mahjong Ways 2 launched the year after the original with an expanded grid and enhanced Gold Plated mechanic. The core structure carries over directly - cascades, Gold Plated Wild transformation, ascending multiplier track, Free Spins with doubled multiplier steps. The sequel raised the max win ceiling and allows more Gold Plated positions per spin. If you have played one, the other plays recognisably. The original is the accessible entry point; the sequel is the escalation - higher variance, higher ceiling, same engine.

Gonzo's Quest (NetEnt, 2011)

The cascade mechanic with a per-cascade multiplier counter predates Mahjong Ways by eight years in Gonzo's Quest. Both games advance a multiplier through each successful cascade step and reset it at round end; both offer enhanced multiplier steps in their feature round. The difference: Gonzo's Quest builds to x15 in Free Falls through a single linear counter, while Mahjong Ways caps at x5 in the base game but adds the Gold Plated Wild transformation layer on top.
